THE BIG DAY

Posted on 31 July 2009 by Carol Schillios

6:15 am

I’m up on the roof waiting for the King 5 TV interview. It’s chilly. The sky is overcast. The sun is rising somewhere out there, lighting the buildings in downtown Edmonds. The city is just beginning to wake up. Looks like King 5 had other breaking news, so I’m headed down to the shop for last minute prep before I officially go up to the roof.

11:30am

I’m totally stressed. Just beam me up Scotty. Thank heavens for volunteer Dana Nunnelly who arrived just in time to send me home for a rest. One of the many lessons I’m learning is to ask for help; and accept the gift of help from others. What a joy to be around volunteers who show up just when you need them most. It’s what I love about what I do – being surrounded by caring volunteers dedicated to service. I can only hope they get as much from this as I do.

3:30pm – One hour to lift off!

Just arrived back at the shop after a visit home to pack a bag. Excitement is building. Dana has everything under control.

Henry is 10. He’s number one volunteer in charge today of no parking signs and barriers at both ends of main street for the arrival of Engine 20 from Edmonds Fire Department. Maddie is in High School; Maddie joined us just last week to start her service learning volunteering, even though she’s not getting credit until school starts in the Fall. These are just two of almost 20 volunteers who showed up to help and support me today for this Up On The Roof event.

9:00pm – First post from up on the roof!

The moon is keeping me company. It’s as though time is suspended up here. Being in this new space reminds me of my first night in a new country. New smells.  Different noises.  Is that scratching George the raccoon who hangs around downtown Edmonds?  Will he join me in my star gazing tonight?

Hi, Carol; I would have written sooner but had family all weekend. I have seen your basket on the sidewalk with the balloons on it, was wondering if you would like some cookies. I’m baking today, cause it’s cooler. Ethnicity northwestern USA I guess.

Who leaked the word that I like snickerdoodles?!! You are kind to think of my sweet tooth. One of the things I notice about the girls who come to our training center in Mali is that once they start receiving regular money, the first thing they do is eat until they are full. This can go on for days. Next they start buying sweets. So I guess sweet tooths are universal, eh?

It’s cold out here tonight. I hear a thunder storm is moving our way on Thursday. Guess I’d better go batton down the hatches.

    Sleep well.
    Carol

Hello Carol- I have been following your adventures the past few years. I met you when you came in to do training at WSECU. I saw your fund raising effort on the WCUL website yesterday. I have sent in a contribution as well as forwarded the article to my fellow Branch Managers here at the Credit Union.
I have also requested some assistance corporately to help with your quest.
Good luck and I will be following you through this adventure.

Hi Carol, My husband and I met you tonight when we rang your basket bells and we spoke with you as you pulled up the basket. We are the ones who have the injured son in the US Marine Corps, we spoke a bit about what he has been through. I just read your website and it resonates something in me that I need to follow up on. I am not exactly sure what it is, but it has to “make a difference” I have known it and felt it for a long while, but am not sure yet what it will entail. It is not about money or being a part of any corporate greed. (been there, done that, it kills my spirit) I have a very creative side that I haven’t tapped into much, (lack of confidence, fear of success?) You make me want to find out what I can do with that energy that I think about so often, but have never put to a good use. I am very blessed to own a beautiful new sewing machine.
I have been in your shop, held the wonderful fabrics in my hands, smelled the wonderful smell of them, and imagined beautiful things…….I am a “want to be quilter”
I think it might be time to get that “want to be” out of the mix.
You are an inspiration, Thank you for all that you do…….
    God Bless You Carol.
    Joni
